Search has changed more in the last two years than in the previous ten. Google now shows AI Overviews above the normal results, people ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for recommendations, and ranking factors lean harder than ever on real expertise and a good user experience.

The good news: the fundamentals still work. Below are the seven areas we focus on when we improve a client’s rankings, in the order we usually tackle them.

1. Optimise the user experience first

Google measures how people interact with your site, so a slow or awkward website holds back everything else you do.

  • Mobile first: most searches in the UK happen on a phone. Check every key page on a real mobile, not just a resized browser.
  • Core Web Vitals: aim for pages that load in under 2.5 seconds, don’t jump around as they load, and respond quickly to taps.
  • Clear navigation: visitors (and search engine crawlers) should reach any important page within two or three clicks.
  • Accessibility: readable fonts, good colour contrast and descriptive image alt text help every user, and help Google understand your pages.

2. Create content that helps people (and AI) answer real questions

AI search tools summarise and compare content before a user ever clicks. To be the page they cite, your content needs to be the clearest, most useful answer.

  • Cover a topic properly rather than publishing lots of thin, similar pages.
  • Structure each page with clear headings, short paragraphs and a direct answer near the top.
  • Add an FAQ section for the questions customers actually ask you.
  • Write the way your customers search, in plain, natural language.

3. Show strong E-E-A-T signals

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) are how Google judges whether your content can be trusted.

  • Show first-hand experience: case studies, real results, photos of your own work and original insights.
  • Make it clear who is behind the business, with an About page, team details and contact information.
  • Earn mentions and links from reputable websites in your industry.
  • Keep content accurate and up to date, and show when it was last reviewed.

This matters most for “Your Money or Your Life” topics such as health, finance and legal services.

4. Target search intent, not just keywords

Modern search engines understand why someone is searching. A page ranks when it matches that intent.

  • Informational searches (“how to…”) need guides and explanations.
  • Commercial searches (“best…”, “… agency London”) need comparisons, prices and proof.
  • Transactional searches (“book…”, “buy…”) need a fast route to enquire or purchase.

Use related terms and topics naturally instead of repeating one keyword, and refresh older pages when searcher expectations change.

5. Fix your technical SEO foundations

Even excellent content won’t rank if search engines struggle to crawl it.

  • Make sure important pages are indexable and listed in your XML sitemap.
  • Fix broken links, redirect old URLs properly and remove thin or duplicate pages.
  • Add structured data (schema) so search engines and AI tools understand your business, services and reviews.
  • Use HTTPS everywhere and keep your CMS and plugins up to date.

6. Build your brand beyond your website

Search engines look at what the rest of the internet says about you.

  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, and keep asking happy customers for reviews.
  • Keep your business name, address and phone number consistent across directories.
  • Share useful content on LinkedIn and industry sites, and get featured in local press where you can.

7. Measure, learn and improve

SEO is never “done”. Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4, then review every month:

  • which pages and search terms bring visitors;
  • which pages turn visitors into enquiries;
  • pages that have dropped in rankings and need refreshing.

Quick checklist

  • Pages load in under 2.5 seconds on mobile
  • Every key page has a unique title, meta description and one clear H1
  • Content answers real customer questions, with FAQs
  • About page, reviews and case studies show your expertise
  • No broken links; old URLs redirect properly
  • Google Business Profile complete and collecting reviews
  • Search Console and GA4 reviewed every month
