Google Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) are the two biggest advertising platforms for small businesses. Both can bring you customers, but they work in completely different ways. Choosing the right one first, or the right mix, can make the difference between a profitable campaign and a wasted budget.
The key difference: intent vs interest
- Google Ads captures demand. Your ad appears when someone is actively searching for what you sell, for example “accountant in Harrow” or “emergency electrician near me”. They already want it.
- Meta Ads creates demand. Your ad appears while people scroll Facebook or Instagram, based on who they are and what they’re interested in. They weren’t looking for you, so the ad has to grab attention and spark interest.
Side-by-side comparison
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Services people search for; urgent needs; high-value leads | Visual products; impulse purchases; new or unfamiliar offers |
| Buyer intent | High | Low to medium |
| Cost per click | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Lead quality | Usually higher | Varies, and needs good qualifying |
| Targeting | Keywords, location, time of day | Demographics, interests, behaviours, lookalike audiences |
| Creative needed | Mostly text | Strong images and short videos |
| Speed to results | Fast, if people search for your service | Fast reach; conversions take testing |
When Google Ads is the better choice
- People already search for your service (solicitors, trades, clinics, B2B services, local businesses).
- Customers need you now: repairs, emergencies, bookings.
- Each customer is worth a lot, so a higher cost per lead is still profitable.
- You want enquiries, calls and form fills rather than awareness.
When Meta Ads is the better choice
- Your product is visual and easy to understand in a few seconds (fashion, food, beauty, home décor, events).
- People don’t know your product exists yet, so there’s little to search for.
- You sell at a lower price point where impulse buying works.
- You want to build an audience, grow brand awareness or promote offers to past customers.
Why the best answer is often both
The two platforms work well together:
- Meta Ads introduces your brand to new people cheaply.
- Some of them later search for you on Google, where your Google Ads and SEO catch them.
- Retargeting on both platforms reminds visitors who didn’t enquire the first time.
If budget is tight, start with the platform that matches how your customers buy, prove it’s profitable, then add the second.
A simple way to decide
- Do at least a few hundred people a month search for your service in your area? Start with Google Ads.
- Is your product visual, new or impulse-driven? Start with Meta Ads.
- Not sure? Run a small, well-tracked test on each for four to six weeks and compare the cost per lead and lead quality, not the cost per click.
Whichever you choose, track properly
Neither platform can optimise without good data. Make sure every enquiry is tracked: form submissions, phone calls and WhatsApp messages. Also connect Google Analytics 4 so you can compare channels fairly.
